Let your light shine

There is a lot of darkness in the world today, that’s no secret and should not come as a surprise to anyone. I understand that it is easy to get caught up and get lost in the darkness. I understand that it easy to feel as if there is ONLY darkness in the world. But I need you to understand that it is not all darkness. That is the enemy at work making it seem that way. In the media whether it be on CNN, Fox 5 news, or MPR on the radio it seems as if the only news happening in the world is bad. All we seem to hear about is some tragic death or crazed killer running amuck, giving us all the impression that the world truly is all bad and that darkness is all that surrounds us. This is where I think we as Christians have somewhat dropped the ball and where we need to step up at. WE are all called to be a light in this world which means that our lives should look differently than that of the world. So many people turn from God and bash Christianity because the people who are claiming to be Christians are living lives that look similar to that of nonbelievers and people walking in darkness yet they judge and condemn everyone they come in contact with. Giving the rest of the world the false impression that Christians are nothing more than judgmental, condemning, hypocrites. Granted the standard of Christianity, and how a Christian is supposed to live their life is Jesus Christ, and that should be who and what people base their judgement and assessment of Christianity on. With that said I completely understand where people are coming from when they do place blame and judgment on the people claiming to be Christians and call them hypocrites. Like I said a Christian’s life should look differently than that of the rest of the world, we are to be a light. Being a light is simply living a life that is representative and reflective of Jesus Christ. WE are called to be a light at work, in the classroom, on the street, in our homes, everywhere we go. WE cannot turn our light on when we are around the people at church and then turn it off Monday through Saturday until it’s time to go to church again on Sunday, it doesn’t work that way. A lot of Christians do that, and that is why so many people tend to label Christians as hypocrites. Yes the world is dark, but YOU must do your part to bring some light into it 24/7, 365 (all day every day for the whole year). Be DIFFERENT, do not conform to the evil ways of the world. Don’t use the environment that you’re in, or the circumstances that you are in as an excuse to live like everyone else and to keep you from living according The Word of God. If everyone in your inner circle does drugs, then YOU need to be different, YOU need to be a light and let them know what The Word says about being of a sober mind. If everyone at school is treating some kid terribly and picking on them, then YOU need to be different, YOU need to be a light and reveal to them what the Word says about loving others as you love yourself. If everyone at the job is slacking and not doing their work, then YOU need to be different, YOU need to be a light and reveal to them that whatever work they are doing they are to work at it with all their hearts, as working for the Lord, not human masters. With that being said understand that your ACTIONS speak louder than your words.  You can tell them what to do and what not to do but if your ACTIONS don’t line up with what you’re saying you’re just another hypocrite making some noise. Lead by example. Be different. Be a LIGHT. Yes the world is full of darkness, and at times it seems as if it gets dark and darker as the days go by, but don’t get discouraged. Look at it this way, the darker it gets the brighter your light will shine, if you let it. Wrong is still wrong even if everybody is doing it, and right is still right even if nobody is doing it. So again I encourage you to do YOUR part. Make sure that YOU are not the one contributing to the problems in the world, understand that if each of us does our part to be a light then the world gets a little bit brighter one day at a time. Change starts from within. We can’t change the world unless we change ourselves. You have to make the change in your life, to not walk in the ways of darkness anymore, and to walk in the ways of THE Light, which is Jesus Christ. Let your light shine today so that people may see God through you, and turn from their ways of darkness and move closer to The Light.

Let me Put the Word on It:

  • Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
  • John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
  • Romans 13:12-14 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.[a]
  • John 9:5 “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”
  • Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
